The International Conference on Women's Rights «To become modern keeping the traditions» took place in Makhachkala. It was held for all women - regardless of their faith or ethnicity, as one of the organizers of the forum, the director of the Daghestani Center for Gender Studies Khatima Omarova stressed in an interview. The main aim of the conference is to develop common approaches and strategies for women's rights in poly-cultural, poly-ethnic and poly-confessional regions, as well as to contribute to the strengthening of traditions and a dialogue among the organizations involved in the sphere of the protection of women’s interests. The conference was attended by representatives from Russia, Azerbaijan, Great Britain, Germany, India, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. «Unfortunately, in Russia's regions with a predomination of the population, professing Islam, takes place systematic throwing of women out of public and political life, - Khatima Omarova said. - This trend is linked to propaganda activities of some radical preachers who are trying to inculcate the belief of the subordination of women not only at home but also in the society». The conference was organized at the initiative of the Administration of the President and the Government of Daghestan, the Republican Center for Gender Studies, the Union of Journalists of Russia and the Charitable Fund «New Daghestan».
