The study of «Gallup» service, held in 143 countries of the world, has shown that the poorer the country is - the more religious is its population, MIGnews.com informs. In general, religion is thriving in the poorest communities of the world where the average person gets no more than 2 thousand dollars a year. 92% of respondents claim there that religion plays a vital role in their lives. As regards the countries where average income per capita exceeds 25 thousand dollars, religion is important only for 44% of respondents. The study has also revealed that in all the countries surveyed, as a rule, the more religious people feel less negative emotions (such as anxiety, despair, depression and anger) and enjoy life more. The reasons for the gradual «wash-out» of religion from the wealthy society are still not clear and are actively debated. One of the theories says that as people become more educated and well off, they gradually begin to pay less attention to religion, «Washington Profile» writes. In their turn, people who have got into trouble often turn to religion, - in many cases religion functions as a system of social support. Another hypothesis is that religion is becoming the last refuge for the «passing away communities» - that is, for population groups whose way of life is subject to major changes under the influence of external forces.
