The interregional socio-political independent newspaper "Northern Caucasus" was founded in 1990. The certificate of registration № 26 issued by the RF Ministry of press on August 30, 1990.
The number of permanent employees - 57 people. Of them journalists - 23 (17 of which are own correspondents). The certificate for the trademark of the newspaper № 146654 issued by Rospatent of the Russian Federation on September 30, 1996 The first issue of "NC" was published at the Nalchik (KBR) Poligrafkombinat in the name of the Revolution of 1905 in November 25, 1990. By February 1, 2008 866 issues of the "NC" newspaper had been published.
The newspaper is cooperating with such agencies, as: ITAR-TASS news agency, Kavkaz-Press, RBI, Regnum, news.ru, etc. "Northern Caucasus" is the only interregional mass media in the South of Russia. Unlike the media, calling themselves as such, but not having any creative and technical base in the region, the newspaper "Northern Caucasus" contains 14 correspondent centers in the cities of Rostov-on-Don, Krasnodar, Sochi, Maikop, Cherkessk, Stavropol, Vladikavkaz , Nazran, Grozny, Makhachkala, Baku, Tbilissi, Yerevan, Moscow. "Northern Caucasus" has opened its own page on Internet - www.sknews.ru, - with the help of which, firstly, it has a direct link with its correspondent centers, and secondly, presents on this page every current issue of NC. In recent months, a growing interest to the NC site is being registered - on average every day more than 400 users of the Network enter our page, among them citizens of Canada, USA, Japan, Holland, Israel, Turkey, Syria, Central Asia.
The newspaper "Northern Caucasus" has manages during 17 years of its existence to create information field that has united the republics, provinces and a region, which heretofore were united only by a geographical term "Caucasian region." It would seem that the absence of a single politico-administrative center, which would provide any newspaper with centralized information of political, economic, cultural and other character, puts the "NC" in disadvantageous conditions compared with other editions (from district to regional). It is difficult to conceive the overall state of economy and political processes in the region, as the 10 subjects of the Federation are not much related to each other economically and culturally. However, this shortcoming has turned for the newspaper "Northern Caucasus" only for the good. The absence of a single administrative centre has released the "NC" of possible direct "leadership" from outside (the newspaper was run as "nobody’s"), has provided an opportunity to cover freely and fearlessly the events that take place in the region, and not to be limited purely to domestic issues.
The readership of the "NC" newspaper, as is shown by regular surveys (last held in July 2007) and letters of the newspaper readers (up to 300 per month) - are mostly people with higher and secondary special education, businessmen, employees of government offices, commercial firms, the military. "Northern Caucasus" – is a newspaper with a considerable potential, which has not become apparent to the present time only because of the lack of material and technical means.

And the last. The newspaper has its own peculiar history, tracing its roots back to the 19th century. In 1990, creating a regional socio-political newspaper "Northern Caucasus", the founder did not suspect that an edition with the same name had once existed in Russia. In 1884, a well-known ethnographer from Stavropol G.N. Prozritelev initiated the publication of social and literary newspaper "Northern Caucasus." Its first publisher was D.I. Yevseyev (for this see: a digest "Typology of the local press", published in the Rostov State University, 1991). The "Northern Caucasus" widely represented the life of the region, printed information on the events within the country ("General Chronicle") and abroad ("Telegrams from abroad"). Teachers, lawyers and ethnographers had been cooperating within the newspaper "Northern Caucasus". In each issue there was printed correspondence from the towns and stanitsas of the region. The edition became mostly known due to the activities of a prominent enlightener and democrat, founder of the Ossetian folklore and literary language - Kosta Khetagurov. He contributed to the newspaper "Northern Caucasus" starting from 1888, and since 1895 he was the executive secretary of the editorial office. "Northern Caucasus" ceased to be published in 1906 because of the financial difficulties: personal means of the publisher were not enough "to cover annual deficits." A. Kazikhanov, editor-in-chief, Nalchik.
